Hublot Big Bang Unico Ferrari All Black 401.CX.0123.VR

Hublot Big Bang Unico Ferrari All Black
Hublot's partnership with Ferrari began in 2012, with the release of a luxury watch that Jean-Claude Biver (then CEO of Hublot) described as though it were his own child. Given that the 'marriage' (to paraphrase Biver) of Ferrari and Hublot was one of Biver's biggest coups, that's hardly surprising.
A year later, the Hublot Big Bang Unico Ferrari All Black 401.CX.0123.VR was unveiled.
The Big Bang Ferrari All Black – also known as the Big Bang Ferrari Ceramic – is like all Hublot Ferrari watches, in that its muscular 45 mm case can be removed from its straps using a triangular pusher located on the lugs. The Hublot Big Bang Ferrari All Black 401.CX.0123.VR is supplied with a black leather strap detailed with Ferrari-red stitches: but variant straps include a red leather bracelet and a rubber bracelet. Rather like detailing your supercar, you can customise the look and feel of your Hublot Big Bang Ferrari All Black.
There are other case and finish variants of the Hublot Big Bang Ferrari All Black: released alongside this model in 2013 were a King Gold (limited to 500 pieces, and with a different reference number) and Red Magic (limited to 1,000 pieces, also with its own unique reference number). The Ceramic or All Black Ferrari model is also part of a 1,000-piece limited run.
The Big Bang Ferrari All Black is presented in an all-black (as the name suggests) ceramic case, with a ceramic bezel. The case is polished, and the bezel is brushed to a nice matte finish. The crystal is sapphire glass, and the case is waterproof to 100 m. The hands and hour markers (a mixture of Arabic numerals and baguette indices) are lumed. And there's a beautiful prancing pony floating on the dial, over the skeletonised interior.
The 'Unico' in the model name (it's sometimes referred to as the Big Bang Unico Ferrari All Black, but more often than not, not, as the Ferrari branding is first and foremost in Hublot's mind) is a nod to the movement growling away in the 'engine bay' of this luxury watch. The Hublot Ferrari All Black watch is powered by a 'Hublot Unico movement' with 38 jewels, which features central hour and minutes, a date window, and a 60-minute chronograph. The Unico movement is self-winding and famously features a 72-hour power reserve. You can see the Unico ticking nicely through the sapphire caseback display, which also reveals a baseplate that seems to be inspired by a Ferrari steering wheel.
There aren't many luxury watch brands that have successfully managed a long-term partnership with a high-end car brand. Breitling have done it with Bentley, and Hublot with Ferrari. According to Jean-Claude Biver, the secret behind the long-lasting success of Hublot's partnership with the Italian stallion is surprisingly simple. When you make a luxury watch for Ferrari, you make a luxury watch specifically for Ferrari. You don't repurpose an existing design to accommodate the extra branding.
That's why (as noted earlier in this article) the Hublot Big Bang Ferrari All Black 401.CX.0123.VR is rarely referred to as a Hublot Unico Big Bang . A Ferrari watch is a Ferrari watch, first and foremost. After all, you wouldn't advertise a 488 Spider by going on about a third-party seat-leather manufacturer, or the guy who designed the transmission. This is a luxury watch with a singular purpose – to thrill – and it pulls it off as well as the supercars with which it is associated.
